Nicaragua

General Right to Vote
Constitution
(1987 with 2005 reforms)

  • Article 51 states, “Citizens have the right to elect and be elected in periodic elections and to vote in popular elections...limited by the restrictions contained in this constitution.”

Electoral Law
(2000)

  • Article 30 states, “The universal, equal, direct, free and secret ballot is a right of Nicaraguan citizens, who shall act in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and laws.”

Exclusion Based on Intellectual Disability

  • Article 134 states: "To be a Deputy [to the National Assembly] the following qualities are required...(2) enjoy full civil and political rights."
  • Article 147 states: "Candidates for president or vice president of the republic shall meet the following requirements...(2) enjoy full civil and political rights."

  • Article 119 states, “Persons having a physical impediment may be accompanied by a trusted person to exercise their right to vote....When the physical impediment is that of the upper extremities the mark with indelible ink may be done on any visible part of the body.”
